Digital Producer (Version 3) – Digging Deeper
We recently released Version 3 of our popular Digital Producer course. Even though the general topics are the same as Version 2, we wound up adding about 80 minutes of new content which explores these areas in a lot more depth. I thought it would be worth discussing the rationale for some of the subjects that we added. Here is a summary of the most significant changes: (more…)

Digital Arranger – Completing Your Musical Ideas

We recently released a new training course Digital Arranger-Know It All! designed to help people create songs for production on a computer. This course is quite different from our other courses which focus primarily on Digital Audio Workstations and other music software. Composing and arranging, no matter what environment you are working in, is less about technology and more about the application of music theory, harmony, and grooves to create various genres and styles of music. I’m going to cover some of the highlights of the new course in this blog. (more…)

Mixing & Mastering (Version 3) – Mo Betta Mastering

We recently released Version 3 of our popular Mixing & Mastering course. What started out as a basic update of the versions of the software products used in the course, turned into a major overhaul – especially for mastering. Somewhat to my surprise we wound up adding about 40 minutes of new content on mastering. I thought it would be worth discussing the rationale for some of the subjects that we added. Here is a summary of the big hitters: (more…)

Digital Producer (Version 2) – What a Difference a Year Makes.

We recently released Version 2 of our Digital Producer training course. Digital Producer is all about making music from digital sources and has proved to be a popular companion to our DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) product courses. It has been over a year since the first release of Digital Producer, so I figured it was time for an update. Although I was aware of a few specific topics that needed updating, when I sat down and actually went through the entire outline, I was amazed at how many things had changed. This blog explains the rationale for the major changes that we made. You can see at summary of the changes at: http://www.digitalmusicdoctor.com/digitalproducer (more…)

Cubase and GarageBand Are Doing It. Why Aren’t You?

One of the main objectives in mixing is to bring out the best sound for each track. Much of our Mixing & Mastering course is dedicated to that subject. However, some people really aren’t into the intricacies of mixing. You just want your tracks to sound good. Experienced mixers tend to start with a formula approach towards mixing. For example, for vocals they will add compression, some predetermined EQ settings, and a room ambience reverb. So rather than re-invent the wheel each time, why not bake the settings of the pros into presets? Individual FX plug-ins have included instrument and music genre oriented presets for a long time. Now some DAW’s, notably Cubase and GarageBand, are promoting the concept of track presets. (more…)
